The Gettysburg Railroad depot on North Washington Street opened in 1858, seven years before Lincoln delivered his address three blocks north. Confederate sharpshooters occupied the brick platform during the July 1863 battle, using its second-floor windows to cover Carlisle Street.

Gettysburg train ride tickets cover multiple themed excursions — Civil War history runs, seasonal foliage routes in October, and December holiday trains with period decorations. Live narrators ride each coach, delivering battlefield chronology as the train rolls past Seminary Ridge and the fields where Reynolds fell on July first. Spring wildflower excursions depart weekly from March through May, while summer evening runs catch sunset over Little Round Top. The depot museum occupies the original freight room, displaying telegraph keys, lanterns, and timetables from the 1860s through the diesel transition.
The railway operates vintage rolling stock acquired from eastern shortlines — coaches once hauled commuters on the Reading Company and Baltimore & Ohio. Maintenance crews preserve original hardware: window sashes lift on rope-and-pulley systems, ceiling fans spin from belt drives, and cast-iron stoves anchor the corners of winter-service cars. Each coach seats forty passengers on reversible cane benches, allowing groups to face forward or inward for conversation. The locomotive roster includes a 1940s Electro-Motive diesel and a 1920s Baldwin switcher, both repainted in Western Maryland's speed-lettering livery.
